Cobb County International Airport New Air Traffic Control Tower Awarded 2015 General Aviation Project of the Year

(Marietta, Ga. – October 23, 2015) The Georgia Airport Association recently awarded Cobb County International Airport with the 2015 General Aviation Project of the Year for its newly constructed Air Traffic Control Tower.

The new air traffic control tower opened in March 2015 and provides improved visibility, proper layout of equipment, less glare, incorporates FAA security standards, an improved work environment for controllers, and a secure office for the tower manager.

The design/build contractor was Moss & Associates, Inc., with AJT Engineering, Inc. serving as the architect. Funding for the $2.9 million project included a $1.25 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program and a $125,000 grant from the State of Georgia’s Division of Aviation.

Karl Von Hagel, Airport Manager, Cobb County International Airport-McCollum Field, said, “We are proud that our community has been recognized for its commitment to its airport and contribution to the safety of aviation and economic development in the region.”

Cobb County International Airport is the second busiest general aviation airport in Georgia and is base to 300 aircraft, while generating an annual economic impact of $112.4 million to the local community and supports 842 local jobs.

The Georgia Airports Association represents the State of Georgia’s 104 airports and its mission is "to provide, develop, and expand a safe and efficient airports system to meet the future economic growth of Georgia through the full implementation of the State Aviation System Plan."
