Members of specialized units are assigned to regular duties and various shifts throughout the Department. They report to these specialized units when a request for services is made.These specialized units have personnel on-call 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.
Crisis Negotiation Team
Crisis Negotiators respond to incidents involving hostage, barricaded, or distraut subjects. CNT members use skillful communications and negotiations to diffuse these critical incidents, and are a key element in most SWAT operations.Crisis Negotiators will also respond to any other incidents at the request of a supervisor where their skills and techniques can be used in resolving an incident.
The Bomb Squad was formed in 1972 and was originally a two man unit. The Unit received its first remote robot in 1990. The Unit is certified by the FBI as a Public Safety Bomb Squad, and all members are Hazordous Device Technicians. The unit is a regional squad that can be called to respond to all manners of bomb and explosive related incidents as well as WMD related incidents that involve Chemical, Biological, Radiological or Nuclear related threats. Due to it's regional response capabilities, the unit is primarily grant funded by the Department of Homeland Security.
Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team
The Cobb County Police Department SWAT Team was formed in 1977. The SWAT Team is made up of Highly Trained and well equipped professionals that respond to a variety of calls for service. The team is made up of officers who are assigned to different units throughout the department.
Personnel assigned to the SWAT Team respond to incidents involving a violent confrontation or the possibility of a violent confrontation occurring. These could include but are not limited to: Dangerous Felons, Barricaded Suspects, Hostage Situations, Escaped Prisoner, etc. The SWAT Team will also respond when requested by another Law Enforcement Agency which has been approved by the Chief of Police or his designee.
Underwater Search & Recovery Team
The Cobb County Underwater Search & Recovery Team (USRT) was established in 1980. The Team consists of 9 Officers who achieve certification as Public Safety Recovery Divers. Each has regular duty assignments throughout the Department and are on call for any incidents or investigations related to the search and/or recovery of persons, property, or evidence known or suspected to be located within a body of water. The Team serves not only Cobb County and it’s local jurisdictions but assists other jurisdictions upon request.
The Honor Guard represents the Department at many ceremonies and formal events where a ceremonial display of colors or respect is required as directed by the Chief of Police. The Honor Guard presents and posts the American flag and the Georgia State Flag. The Honor Guard also coordinates with other agencies' Honor Guard Teams to pay respects at funerals for their fallen officers. Many members pay to travel to Washington D. C. to represent the Police Department at National Police Week each year.
