Major Roadway Improvement Project Begins on Cumberland Boulevard

(Marietta, GA - Jan. 19, 2017) A popular entrance into Cumberland Mall is getting a facelift as part of an $8.8 million safety and roadway improvement project along Cumberland Boulevard.
The Cobb County Department of Transportation (CCDOT) project officially began earlier this week and will take 20 months to complete. The project will improve traffic flow along an 0.85-mile section of Cumberland Boulevard from Akers Mill Road to Spring Hill Road while adding a sidewalk on the north side of the I-285 overpass.
Operations at the CobbLinc Transfer Station will not be affected during the duration of this project.
The road and safety project will include:

  • Widening Cumberland Boulevard from two to three westbound lanes from Akers Mill Road/Stillhouse Road, allowing free-flow right-turn movement from Akers Mill Road southbound to Cumberland Boulevard westbound.
  • The construction of a new sidewalk on the north side of the I-285 overpass bridge.
  • Significant intersection traffic and safety improvements and signal operations improvements at Cumberland Boulevard/Cumberland Parkway and at mall entrances on Cumberland Boulevard.
  • Restriping the Cumberland Boulevard/I-285 bridge overpass to reduce lane width from 12 feet to 11 feet for a 6-foot sidewalk construction along the northern side of the bridge.  (A two-month lane closure may be required for sidewalk construction on the bridge overpass.)
  • Restriping and new signage west of the I-285 bridge along Cumberland Boulevard, for improved delineation of left-turn lanes for Spring Road and through lanes for Spring Hill Road.
  • Retaining walls to minimize impacts to the Cumberland Mall parking lots and the Cumberland Place Shopping Center parking lots.
  • Addition of streetscaping to include landscaping, street and pedestrian lighting, street furniture, pedestrian plazas and corner treatments along both sides of Cumberland Boulevard from Akers Mill Road to Spring Road.
From time to time, lane closures will be scheduled during this project. These closures will occur during overnight hours from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Lane closures will not be allowed during the 2017 holiday shopping season.
The project is funded by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) and SPLOST. Project updates are available at on Twitter and @CobbCountyDOT on Facebook and Instagram.
