Concord Road covered bridge to close briefly April 13

The historic Concord Road covered bridge near Smyrna will close Thursday, April 13, 2017, from 10 a.m. to noon as part of preparations for its upcoming summer closure, which will begin in two months.

With 7,000 to 10,000 cars traveling it each day, the bridge—which was built in the 1800s—has the highest traffic count of all covered bridges in Georgia combined. Construction to add metal support boxes to reinforce the structure from the inside will begin this June and continue through summer 2017. Additional renovations include siding and roof repairs and guard rail replacement as well as cleaning and painting, at a cost of approximately $630,000 in Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds.
