Hundreds gathered at the Turner Chapel AME Church in Marietta to celebrate the life of former County Manager David Hankerson. Hankerson died last week at the age of 77 following a long illness.
Both current and former county employees filled the chapel to reminisce about the man known as “Mister H.” He was Cobb County’s first African-American County Manager and the longest serving. Hankerson shepherded the county from a quiet suburb to a growing metropolitan county.
Current County Manager Dr. Jackie McMorris told the audience her heart was filled with many emotions. She knew many who worked for Hankerson considered him a tough but fair boss.
“He was direct, he was straightforward, he was no-holds-barred, he was serious,” Dr. McMorris said. “But he was also compassionate and passionate. He loved this county dearly.”
Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Lisa Cupid said the crowd “said a lot about his ability to reach across any spectrum and connect with people.”
