The Cobb County Board of Commissioners presented Make-A-Wish Georgia with a check for $40,000 at its meeting Oct. 12. The money was raised by the Cobb Department of Public Safety as it hosted a Make-A-Wish 5K race in historic Marietta Square in October. More than 500 participants ran or walked the course in support of this worthy cause. The $40,000 was raised from the 5K as well as sponsorships received from the business community. Proceeds will be used by Make-A-Wish Georgia to grant wishes for local children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Commissioners issued a proclamation designating the first week of November as Operation Green Light for Veterans in Cobb County. The event encouraged the public to display a green light as a visible symbol of appreciation for veterans. Cobb County residents honor the men and women who served in the Armed Forces. We believe their service is essential to maintaining our nation’s freedoms and way of life. Veterans continue to contribute to the community through organizations like the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and various religious and civil service groups. Some also serve as County Veteran Service Officers in 29 states, helping veterans access more than $52 billion in benefits each year. The National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veterans Service Officers encourage everyone to participate in Operation Green Light, an initiative raising awareness for veterans who face challenges accessing benefits. The initiative invites residents to display a green light in a window of their home from Nov. 4 -11 as a symbol of support, honoring the service and sacrifice of those transitioning from active service. The color represents hope, renewal, and well-being. |

The Board presented a proclamation to the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution American Indians Committee designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month. The history and culture of our great nation have been significantly influenced by American Indians and indigenous peoples. The contributions of American Indians have enhanced the freedom, prosperity, and greatness of America today. Their customs and traditions are respected and celebrated as part of a rich legacy throughout the United States. Native American Awareness Week began in 1976 and recognition was expanded by Congress and approved by President George Bush in August 1990, designating the month of November as National American Indian Heritage Month. In honor of National American Indian Heritage Month, community celebrations, as well as, numerous cultural, artistic, educational, and historical activities have been planned. At the recent Cobb County Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Keli Gambrill presented a check for $6,127 raised in the 2nd annual Battle of the Paddles Pickleball Tournament in support of Meals on Wheels! This year’s tournament invited participation from all county departments, showcasing Cobb employees’ talent, enthusiasm, and commitment to the community. |

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recognized Cobb County Procurement Services for receiving the 2024 Achievement of Excellence in Procurement award. This is a national recognition by the National Placement Institute. Cobb is one of only 11 recipients of the award in Georgia this year. |

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recognized the Cobb County Police Department's 100th anniversary and its century of dedicated service to the community. In 1924, the first “County Police,” operating separately from the Sheriff’s Office, started working in Cobb County on an ad hoc basis. In 1936, the first two full-time County Police officers were hired. In 1943, The formal title of Cobb County Police Department was approved by the Board of Commissioners and Esmer C. Ward was named the first Chief of Police. The Cobb County Police Department has continued to evolve over the years with the inception of major departmental changes to better serve residents. In 1959, the first motorcycle unit was formed. The department switched to a precinct system of manpower allocation in 1974 by adding a second precinct in Mableton. The SWAT Team was formed in 1977 and the DUI Task Force was formed in 1982. The Cobb County Public Safety Training Center opened in 1995, and in 1999 the Cobb County Police Academy received POST accreditation to train and certify police recruits in its own mandate training academy. In 2021, The department headquarters moved to a five-story building at 545 South Fairground Street. Its Real-Time Crime Center was established using state-of-the-art technology and has been recognized as a model for the use and practice of integrated technology across the nation. Throughout the 100 years, the department recognized and cherished the sacrifices of six members who were killed in the line of duty. This includes Lieutenant John Hood, Officer Drew Brown, Officer Robert Ingram, Sergeant Steve Reeves, Officer Stephen Gilner, and Officer James “Freddie” Norman.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recognized Designated Oct. 13 - 19, 2024 as National Veterinary Technician Week in Cobb County. Veterinary technicians are critical to the day-to-day function of veterinary practices, and play vital roles in preserving health and welfare at Cobb Animal Services. These technicians provide indispensable support to veterinarians by administering medications, conducting laboratory tests, assisting with surgeries, and performing a variety of critical tasks. They aid in the prevention of diseases, stopping overpopulation, and increase the comfort of these companions in our care. |

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recognized the 64th anniversary of Cobb County International Airport - McCollum Field. Since its opening, the airport has become the fifth busiest in Georgia, with a reputation as one of the leading airports of its size in the country. The airport averages 350 take-offs and landings daily with more than 100,000 flight operations each year.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners recognized October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and specifically noted Friday, Oct. 18, as Pink Out Day in Cobb County. Employees will help promote public awareness and early detection of this deadly condition by wearing pink on that date. Cobb and Douglas Public Health ensures low-income women, who are uninsured or under-insured, receive access to breast and cervical cancer screening. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps educate women about the importance of early detection for breast cancer and promotes mammography as the most effective tool for detection. Early detection and treatment have increased the five-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer to 90 percent. However, many women do not conduct physical breast exams and many 40 and older do not get mammography at regular intervals. Many health organizations continue to support innovative awareness programs, scientific research, and education. We urge educators, service providers, researchers and advocacy groups to work together to develop ways to educate the public about breast cancer and ensure all women have access to appropriate breast cancer screening services. Cobb and Douglas Public Health is committed to ensuring low-income women who are uninsured or under-insured, receive access to breast and cervical cancer screening. Last year, the agency diagnosed 34 women with breast cancer through their program services |

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Proclamation The Cobb County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation designating September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month in Cobb County. Education and awareness regarding ovarian cancer are especially crucial because symptoms are often vague or entirely absent, and there is no early detection test for the disease, making diagnosis particularly difficult. Once diagnosed, treatment options are often limited, and the cancer progresses rapidly. Only 50 percent of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer survive five years beyond their diagnosis, and mortality rates have not significantly improved in decades. |

Homicide Victim Remembrance Day The Cobb County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation declaring Sept. 25 as Homicide Awareness Day. Representatives from the Rehoboth Board, the Cobb District Attorney’s Office, Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton, and local law enforcement attended the presentation. Homicide Awareness Day is dedicated to honoring the memories of homicide victims, supporting their families, and raising awareness about the impact of violent crime in the community. The day also encourages education and prevention efforts to reduce violence and foster safer communities. |

Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 - Oct. 15, 2024 The Cobb County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation designating Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month, a time to honor the vibrancy of Hispanic culture and recognize the invaluable contributions its members make to our community. More than 13% of Cobb County residents, about 103,000 people, are Hispanic. They enrich our state’s cultural diversity and contribute to its economic prosperity through their dedication, skills, and community involvement. |

During its regular meeting Sept. 10, the Board of Commissioners presented a proclamation designating Sept. 17-23, as Constitution Week as well as a proclamation designating Sept. 17, as Constitution Day in Cobb County. The Fielding Lewis Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a public Ringing of the Bells celebration at 3:30 p.m. today, Sept. 17, in Historic Marietta Square to mark the event. The purpose of Constitution Week celebration is to emphasize the public's responsibility to defend the Constitution and encourage study of the historical events that led to the framing of this foundational document. This year marks the 237th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution. |

During its regular meeting Sept. 10, the Board of Commissioners presented a certificate of recognition to Cobb County Police Officer Tiersa Grostic for safe driving during a telematics trial project. Samsara is a monitoring system placed in all county cars to assist in changing bad driving behaviors and to acknowledge good, safe driving by employees. The Cobb County Police Department was chosen for a trial phase. During this phase, Grostic held the highest score for safe driving habits out of all participants. We congratulate her on her professionalism and outstanding efforts to keep the public safe on our roads. |

During its regular meeting Tuesday, the Cobb County Board of Commissioners proclaimed September as National Senior Center Month here. For more than 50 years, Cobb County Senior Services has proudly provided programs, resources and support for older adults and their families. Each of the seven senior centers provides multiple opportunities to engage in activities such as exercise, art, dancing, hiking, cooking, health, education, special events and day trips. Cobb Senior Services Center staff introduced new programs and activities this year, expanding evening and weekend opportunities. Staff members and customers attended the Tuesday presentation to show their support. |

Child Support Awareness Month, observed every August in the United States, was established to emphasize the critical role child support plays in ensuring the well-being of children whose parents are separated or divorced. Initiated in 1995, the observance aims to raise public awareness about the importance of child support enforcement and to acknowledge the efforts of parents and caregivers who provide financial and emotional support for their children. The month-long campaign also highlights the services and resources available through child support programs that help families navigate the complexities of child support arrangements. By fostering understanding and cooperation between parents, Child Support Awareness Month seeks to ensure that children have access to the resources they need for healthy growth and development. |

The Board of Commissioners recognized Information Technology Services (ITS) for being ranked fifth among the top ten digital counties nationwide with a population between 500,000 – 999,999. The Center for Digital Government (CDG) and the National Association of Counties (NACo) 2024 Digital Counties Survey recognized counties embracing innovative technologies, data governance, cybersecurity, and equity efforts for more responsive and effective government. The Digital Counties Survey is one of the most powerful market surveys and benchmarking tools for state, city and county government leaders. This survey assesses how our nation's jurisdictions are applying technology to better serve their constituents. There are 3,244 counties nationwide. There are 100 counties in the United States with a population between 500,000-999,999. Since 2021, Cobb has received recognition each year and ranked in the top ten counties in the population category of 500,000-999,999. Cobb County placed fifth this year and the ranking recognized Cobb’s improvements in key areas that make information and services more accessible to residents and businesses. Some of these include: using new tools to enhance social media engagement with residents, revamping our 911 recruiting website, continued implementation of a standard online payment processor, and retiring a 30-year-old data center in favor of a new facility with enhanced security, data safety, and increased storage. |

Chairwoman Lisa Cupid recognized Aug. 8, 2024, as Whataburger Day in Cobb County. In 1950, the restaurant Whataburger was established by Harmon Dobson, receiving high praise and earning customer loyalty. In 2022, the chain debuted its first location in Cobb County at Kennesaw, with lines of cars wrapped around the block. There are now three Whataburger locations in Cobb County: two in Kennesaw and one near The Battery, Atlanta. That third location had the significant distinction of being the 1,000th Whataburger restaurant in the nation. |
