Powder Springs residents may be a few months away from lower water rates after the Board of Commissioners approved a purchase of the city's water system.

Cobb County's Board of Commissioners approved the use of $5.5 million of water system funds to buy the Powder Springs system.  The sale requires approval by the Powder Springs City Council which by law can only happen after a 30-day advertisement period.

Cobb County Water System Director Steve McCullers told commissioners the deal would move 7,500 customers into the Cobb system where rates are 30-percent lower.  Eight Powder Springs water employees would move into the Cobb County Water Department.

"This is truly a win-win for the county and Powder Springs residents," said McCullers.  The county will spread the purchase over the next ten years, using the increased revenue to make the payments.  Following that period, the Cobb Water System expects an additional $550,000 a year in revenue.

The board's vote was 5-0 in favor of the purchase.
