The Cobb County Police Department Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a serious injury traffic collision that occurred on Dallas Acworth Highway (State Route 92) north of Picketts Ridge, on Monday, October 26, 2020, at 12:58 a.m. 

According to investigators, a silver 2006 Infiniti FX35 was traveling north on Dallas Acworth Highway north of Picketts Ridge when the vehicle failed to maintain its lane of travel and exited the roadway at its western edge. The Infiniti collided with and traveled over the raised concrete curb and onto the grass shoulder before becoming airborne and entering a wooded area west of the grass shoulder. The Infiniti collided with several trees before coming to a final uncontrolled rest in the wooded area on its roof.

The driver of the Infiniti FX35, 47-year-old Eric L. Payton of Acworth, was transported to Wellstar Kennestone with serious injuries and is listed in critical condition. His next of kin has been notified via Wellstar Kennestone personnel.
