The Honorable Jason D. Marbutt was elected to the Superior Court bench in August of 2020, taking office January 1, 2021.  Prior to joining the Superior Court, Judge Marbutt served the people of Cobb County as a Senior Assistant District Attorney specializing in elder abuse and white collar crime.  He was the Chairman of the Cobb Elder Abuse Task Force (CEATF) from 2012 until 2020, founder of the Justice for Elderly and Disabled Multidisciplinary Team (JEDI MDT) in 2018, and helped draft many of the laws related to elder abuse in the State of Georgia during his time as a prosecutor.  In 2017, both the Georgia State House and Senate passed resolutions memorializing Judge Marbutt’s work protecting the elderly and disabled. Prior to working as an assistant district attorney, he worked as an Assistant Solicitor General for Cobb County, prosecuting misdemeanor offenses in State Court.

Judge Marbutt was born in Austell and raised in neighboring Douglas County.  He was the co-valedictorian of Alexander High School in 1994.  He went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania where he obtained a B.A. in Psychology.  After undergrad, he travelled the world, backpacking through Europe, partly on his own, prior to taking a job as a high school teacher and assistant wrestling coach at the Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii.  He then joined Teach For America, a national service program that places highly qualified individuals in under resourced public schools throughout the nation.  He taught kindergarten as part of his training, and ultimately obtained an elementary teaching certification in the State of New Jersey.  He taught middle school math and science for two years in Newark, New Jersey before moving back home to Georgia to attend law school.

Judge Marbutt obtained his law degree from Emory School of Law in 2004.  Since 2014, he has served as an Adjunct Professor at Emory Law, teaching a class on criminal sentencing.  Besides teaching law school, he is very active in the community.  He particularly loves coaching and mentoring youth.  He has helped coach the Walton High School Mock Trial team for many years, and he has coached more than twenty sports teams in soccer, wrestling, and softball.  He is a proud Board member of the Marietta Metro Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow to Rotary International, and a member of the Charles Longstreet Weltner Family Law Inn of Court.  Judge Marbutt’s wife, Olivia, is also an attorney, specializing in intellectual property litigation.  They have three children.
