It's National Community Development Week!

National Community Development Week was created in 1986 to bring national attention to the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program at a time when the program was facing scrutiny by Congress. The week-long celebration has expanded to include the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program.

For more than 46 years, CDBG has provided local communities with an important source of funds to address affordable housing and community and economic development needs and for more than 29 years, the HOME program has helped communities provide access to affordable housing for low-income households.

Since 1982, the CDBG Program has brought more than $139 million to Cobb County and its municipalities to fund public facilities and public services to improve the social, economic and physical environment of low and moderate-income persons, as well as individuals with special needs residing in Cobb County. Non-profit organizations receiving CDBG funds provide a wide variety of services, such as: after-school programs, day care,  domestic violence and family crisis intervention, housing opportunities, shelter for the homeless and disabled, literacy programs, employment training, youth and senior services, transportation assistance, and veteran services.

Given the continued shortage of affordable housing, the ongoing need for infrastructure and services, and investment in low-income neighborhoods, we're excited and proud to celebrate these programs and its impact on Cobb County.

CDBG Program Highlights
During 2020, a total of 2,835 Cobb County residents received assistance through the Community Development Block Grant Program with expenditures of approximately $4,199,079.45 ($3,462,187.62 in CDBG funding and $375,541.43 in CDBG-CV funding) including $361,350.40 in program income and $135,126.49 in minor home repair grants.

HOME Program Highlights
Affordable housing initiatives were addressed through the acquisition and construction of single-family homes, tenant-based rental assistance, and down-payment assistance. The County expended a total of $1,001,751.10 which included $527,890.56 in HOME funds and $473,866.54 in program income for affordable housing initiatives. A total of 170 residents were assisted through the Tenant Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) Program. Additionally, four (4) new affordable homes were constructed and nine low income households received Down Payment Assistance (DPA).
