Situational Awareness

Being aware of your surroundings is very important and can help keep you from being the victim of a crime.

All too often we become preoccupied with our cell phones, or other things going on in our lives, that we fail to take a good look at our surroundings. Being prepared (not paranoid) can help keep you safe.

Have you ever heard of a car crime called “Sliding?” A Sliding crime often takes place at a gas station. You get out of your car to pump the gas, and leave your car doors unlocked with your purse or other valuables on the front passenger seat. A car pulls up along the opposite side of your car, and the offender exits their vehicle, slouches down, slides over, and opens your car door to steal your belongings while you’re busy pumping gas or inside the gas station. Paying attention to your surroundings is key to remaining safe.

This is a crime of opportunity. A person that has the desire and ability to commit a crime will find it hard to do so if the “opportunity” is removed.

Here are some tips to help keep you safe:

• Get in and out of your car “with purpose.” Don’t project that you’re distracted with things.
• Keep doors locked and windows rolled up.
• Keep valuables out of sight.
• Park in well-lit and well populated areas.
• If you have to look at something twice because it doesn’t look right, trust your instincts. Get gas somewhere else. Park in a different area or call 911.

Officers hear “I knew that didn’t look right” from victims of crimes all too often.

Community Affairs Officers for Precinct 2

The Community Affairs Unit seeks to effectively engage the community and citizens to strengthen Public Safety and community partnerships, facilitate a joint effort in solving problems which affect our community, and foster enhanced trust, communication, transparency, and mutual respect. Officers work with homeowner’s associations, community organizations, advocacy groups, public and private schools, faith-based organizations, and individual residents to promote partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

As a result of these working partnerships, the officers are able to develop pro-active crime fighting projects that are jointly undertaken by Department personnel and citizens.

Your Precinct 2 Heroes at Work

Reckless Conduct

On 5/21/21 at 9:50 p.m., Officers responded to a shots fired call. A male had exited his house and fired 7-8 shots while yelling angrily. Officers arrived, and the male exited the house, yelling and taunting the officers. He refused to comply with the officer’s commands. Officers were forced to use a taser to gain control and arrest the subject, who was subsequently transported to the hospital for psychiatric care.

Wanted Person Arrested

On 5/4/21 at 2:28 a.m., morning watch officers located a wanted person, who was known to flee from police. Officers approached, and the wanted person entered a car and attempted to leave the area. Officers used their patrol vehicles to strategically block the suspect in. The suspect vehicle came into contact with a patrol car and was unable to flee any further. Officers were able to arrest the wanted subject and located a rifle in the vehicle with him. Other than the charges on the outstanding warrant, the subject was also charged with fleeing and eluding, possession of a firearm during to commission of a felony, and convicted felon in possession of the weapon.

Cobb County Camera Registry

The Cobb County Police Camera Registration program is a police/community video partnership that operates on a voluntary basis with homeowners, neighborhoods and business owners who own private video surveillance systems. We encourage both businesses and residents to register their cameras online by completing the form below.

This program is intended to let our officers know where cameras are active in the county in case a crime occurs. It is not intended for active surveillance, and officers will not have direct access to homeowners' cameras. Those who register a camera will be contacted if a crime occurs in the vicinity of that camera. Information provided by residents and businesses will be maintained in a secure database.
