Fatal Traffic Collision

The Cobb County Police Department's Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal traffic collision that occurred on the I-285 west ramp to I-75 north on Sunday, August 2, 2020, at 10:34 p.m. 

According to investigators, a gray 2020 Honda Accord was traveling west on I-285 in the right lane while a white 1988 Toyota 4Runner was traveling to the rear of the Honda Accord in the same lane at a higher speed. The Toyota 4Runner attempted to change lanes to pass left of the Honda Accord; however, the right front of the Toyota 4Runner collided with the left rear of the Honda Accord. The Honda Accord was redirected to the right, into the emergency lane, then into the guard rail. The Toyota 4Runner rotated clockwise and rolled, coming to a final uncontrolled rest on its right side.

The driver of the Honda Accord, 26-year-old Laclara Johnson of Morrow, was transported to Kennestone Hospital with minor non-life-threatening injuries. 

The driver of the Toyota 4Runner, 39-year-old Joseph Costyn of Atlanta, was unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. Costyn was located under the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. Costyn was pronounced deceased on the scene. Next of kin has been notified.
