Fatal Traffic Collision (March 28, 2019)

The Cobb County Police Department’s Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Unit is investigating a fatal collision that occurred on Hiram Acworth Highway (State Route 92), north of Holland Road on March 27, 2019 at 11:03 p.m.

Per investigators, a burgundy 2000 Freightliner towing a trailer was traveling north on Hiram Acworth Highway north of Holland Road.

A silver 2012 Ford Taurus was traveling north on Hiram Acworth Highway behind the Freightliner.

A blue 2004 Nissan Maxima was traveling south on Hiram Acworth Highway approaching Holland Road.

The Ford Taurus attempted to pass the Freightliner in the southbound lane in a passing zone. Upon moving into the southbound lane, the Ford Taurus entered the path of the Nissan Maxima and the two vehicles collided in a head on type collision. The Ford Taurus then collided with the left side of the Freightliner.

The driver of the Freightliner, 31-year-old Celso Velasquez of Lawrenceville, was not injured in the collision.

The driver of the Nissan Maxima, 57-year-old Steven Bishop of Dallas, died on scene as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. The passenger of the Nissan Maxima, 46-year-old Tommy Johnson of Dallas, also died on scene as a result of injuries sustained during the collision.

The driver of the Ford Taurus, 24-year-old Stephanie Jenkins of Resaca, and her passenger, 23-year-old Keymont Jenkins of Douglasville, were transported to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with serious injuries.
