On Saturday, March 16, 2019 at approximately 6:17 a.m. a single vehicle fatality collision occurred on Hicks Road south of Swamp Fox Way.

Per investigators, 24-year-old Jony S. Hernandez-Funes of Mableton was driving a black 2003 Audi TT south on Hicks Road.  He failed to negotiate a left curve near Frontier Trail.  The Audi left the western edge (right side) of the roadway and struck a mailbox located at 3262 Hicks Road.  The Audi continued southbound on the grass shoulder passing the intersection with Swamp Fox Way.  The Audi left the grass shoulder and crossed the driveway at 3370 Hicks Road.  After crossing the driveway, the vehicle entered back onto the grass shoulder and collided with the mailbox.

The Audi then re-entered the roadway traveling in a southeasterly direction.  It then continued across Hicks Road and collided with the concrete curb at the eastern edge (left side) of the roadway.  The Audi exited the roadway and travelled over the curb, sidewalk, and entered onto the shoulder.  It then struck a large tree before coming to rest upside down.

Mr. Hernandez-Funes was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.  Next of kin has been notified.
