Vacation Crime Prevention

Planning on finally going on the vacation you postponed due to Covid? Great!

Do you want your stuff to be there waiting for you when you get back? Let us help with some vacation crime prevention tips.

Before Leaving, Secure Your Residence

• Have good locks on all doors and windows and use them.
• Make sure your residence looks lived in, not empty.
• Leave shades and blinds in a normal position.
• Ask a neighbor to watch your residence while your are away. Leave your vacation address and telephone number with a neighbor so you can be reached in case of an emergency.
• Test your smoke and burglar alarms.
• Stop all deliveries, arrange for a neighbor to pick up your mail, newspaper and packages.
• Arrange for someone to mow your lawn, rake leaves and maintain the yard to give the home a lived-in look.
• Have a neighbor place garbage cans at the curb on your normal pickup day(s) and return them after the garbage pickup is made.
• Plug in timers to turn lights and a radio or television on and off at appropriate times.
• Don’t announce your absence on answering machine messages; leave your normal message on the machine.
• Close and lock garage doors and windows.
• Ask a neighbor to occasionally park in your driveway. If you leave your car at home, park it as you normally would.
• Vehicles parked outside should be moved occasionally to appear that they are being used.
• Consider taking valuables to a bank safety deposit box.
• In case you do get burglarized, you have all your serial numbers recorded, right?
• Don’t post your vacation plans on social media. Criminals have social media too.
• Don’t announce that you’ll be gone.
• Consider getting a Ring or Nest type doorbell camera. Criminals look for these when picking houses to burglarize and try to stay away from homes that have them. They also greatly assist police in solving burglaries and thefts.

If you know your neighbor is out of town and you see suspicious activity at or near their house, please call 911. We would rather respond and have it be nothing than have to take a burglary report.

Community Affairs Officers for Precinct 2

The Community Affairs Unit seeks to effectively engage the community and citizens to strengthen Public Safety and community partnerships, facilitate a joint effort in solving problems which affect our community, and foster enhanced trust, communication, transparency, and mutual respect. Officers work with homeowner’s associations, community organizations, advocacy groups, public and private schools, faith-based organizations, and individual residents to promote partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

As a result of these working partnerships, the officers are able to develop pro-active crime fighting projects that are jointly undertaken by Department personnel and citizens.

Officer Mike Hill is assigned as the Community Affairs officers serving the community in Precinct 2.

Your Precinct 2 Heroes at Work

Recovered Stolen Vehicle

On 6/4/2021, Officers observed a vehicle previously reported stolen. The vehicle was occupied, and officers conducted a felony traffic stop on the vehicle, taking the driver passenger into custody without incident. The driver was arrested for vehicle theft, and while he was being arrested, officers found him to be in possession of methamphetamine.

Aggravated Assault

On 6/20/21 at 11:35 p.m., Precinct 2 officers responded to a location regarding a shots fired call. When officers arrived, they located several shell casings in the parking lot along with several parked vehicles that were hit by gun fire. No one was reported or discovered to been hit by gunfire. Officers interviewed several people and relied on physical evidence to guide their investigation. Through the investigation several involved parties were identified. A suspect was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault/Damage to Property.

Cobb County Camera Registry

The Cobb County Police Camera Registration program is a police/community video partnership that operates on a voluntary basis with homeowners, neighborhoods and business owners who own private video surveillance systems. We encourage both businesses and residents to register their cameras online by completing the form below.

This program is intended to let our officers know where cameras are active in the county in case a crime occurs. It is not intended for active surveillance, and officers will not have direct access to homeowners' cameras. Those who register a camera will be contacted if a crime occurs in the vicinity of that camera. Information provided by residents and businesses will be maintained in a secure database.

Cobb PAL focuses on juvenile crime prevention through athletic and recreational activities for Cobb County’s high-risk neighborhoods, primarily in South Cobb.
