(MARIETTA, GA) — The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is launching a 90-day pilot program to enhance security at the Adult Detention Center with the phased deployment of DEKA’s state-of-the-art Sentry robots. Designed to reinforce security across the 10-acre property, this advanced robotic system will assist personnel with perimeter patrols and security rounds in select dormitories, introducing a new layer of safety and operational efficiency.

“As security challenges evolve, law enforcement must move at the speed of innovation,” said Cobb County Sheriff Craig Owens. “We are committed to working smarter and are excited to bring robotics into our facility to improve our operations and support the overall safety of our detainees and staff.”

Standing at nearly six-feet-tall, Sentry robots serve as a powerful and visible deterrent to potential threats. Equipped with 360-degree cameras, night vision, lights, heat detection, and two-way audio capabilities, the robots provide continuous surveillance and real-time communications. While the Sentry robots are programmed to navigate the facility autonomously, a live operator will control them for more complex tasks – ensuring adaptable security tailored to the situation at hand.

This pilot program is part of a larger phased implementation of Sentry robots, in alignment with DEKA's philosophy of partnering closely with clients to develop customized solutions that exceed industry standards. DEKA’s approach leverages an extensive patent portfolio to accelerate development, delivering technology that is tailored to specific needs from the outset. The introduction of robotic security at the Cobb County ADC marks a significant advancement in public safety, with metro Atlanta and other regions using security robots to patrol office parking garages and large public complexes. The Cobb County Sheriff’s Office will begin with a fleet of three Sentry robots during the pilot phase, with the potential for future expansion based on the program's success.

Sentry is not just a tool for augmenting officer capabilities; it fundamentally transforms the approach to security by eliminating risks associated with human intervention in dangerous situations. With constant 24/7 visual and audio surveillance, Sentry eliminates gaps associated with fatigue and operational errors while documenting every incident in real time for immediate response and post-event analysis.

“Autonomous systems and robotics are transforming every industry and security is no exception,” said Dean Kamen, Founder and President of DEKA. “What we have created with Sentry is a highly advanced system—and force multiplier—for correctional facility officers that sets a new standard for safety and operational efficiency.”

ADC staff received training to familiarize themselves with the operation and capabilities of the Sentry robots, ensuring seamless integration into existing security protocols. The Cobb County Sheriff's Office continues to collaborate with DEKA to refine deployment strategies and identify the most effective ways to utilize this technology. This ongoing partnership ensures that the technology evolves alongside the facility's needs, allowing for continuous improvement and adaptation.
