Jan. 9, 2024 - Cobb Chief Magistrate Judge Brendan Murphy calls the Magistrate Court the “People’s Court,” the court that never closes. Keeping the court running 24 hours a day will be a challenge this weekend, as electrical work will cut power to the portion of the courthouse complex housing the Magistrate Court.

Judge Murphy says his teams will use the Jury Assembly Room area in the nearby Superior Court building to keep operations running 24 hours/day. During the outage, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office will keep the Superior Court building’s checkpoint on Lawrence Street open so people can access the Magistrate Court’s temporary setup on the building’s first floor.

The electrical work is scheduled to run from 5:30 p.m. on Friday, January 12, to midday on Monday, January 15.  Signs on Waddell Street will direct people to the Lawrence Street checkpoint. Judge Murphy says court operations supporting the public and public safety will continue throughout the weekend.
