No Lead Service Lines Have Been Identified In CCWS’ Service Area
Water Service Line Types & Responsibilities
The Cobb County Water System (CCWS) distributes water to our service area via water mains. The system-owned service line is the pipe from the water main to the connection point at the water meter. The customer-owned service line is the pipe from the meter to the building or the meter to the irrigation system. CCWS is only responsible for maintaining the system-owned line. The property owner is responsible for maintaining the customer-owned line.
Determining We Are Lead-Free
CCWS has complied with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations for all public water systems to inventory and submit water service line material data.

Per regulations, service lines are defined into one of four classifications:
- Lead: A portion of the pipe that is made of lead, which connects the water main to the building inlet.
- Galvanized Requiring Replacement (GRR): A galvanized service line that is or ever was downstream of a lead service line or is currently downstream of an unknown service line.
- Non-Lead: The service line is determined not to be lead or GRR through an evidence-based record, method, or technique.
- Unknown: The service line material is not known to be a lead, GRR, or non-lead, such as where there is no documented evidence supporting material classification.
No lead or galvanized requiring replacement have been identified in CCWS’ service area, which includes most of unincorporated Cobb County and the cities of Acworth, Kennesaw, and Powder Springs. All service lines in CCWS' inventory have been defined as non-lead. The inventory was developed using historical records, physical inspections, and statistical analyses. Per EPA's guidance, the water service line material for both the system-owned side and customer-owned side of the pipes are labeled in the inventory.
