Cumberland area projects bring new traffic shifts for coming months

(Marietta, Ga. -- Jan. 30) New lane closures and adjustments have begun as Cobb County Department of Transportation staff continues construction projects to improve mobility and traffic in the Cumberland area.

  • Interstate North Circle: through March 26 | Pipe Replacement
Interstate North Circle is closed from just north of its intersection with Interstate North Parkway (near The Weather Channel) to Windy Ridge Parkway until Sunday, March 26. The 60-day full road closure is required as crews replace a failing corrugated metal pipe with a reinforced concrete pipe. All driveways will remain accessible throughout the closure period.

  • Windy Hill Road: Jan. 30-March 10 | DDI Construction
Eastbound travel lanes on Windy Hill Road at the Interstate 75 overpass will shift farther right along the south side of the bridge as crews barricade the center of the roadway for construction of walls and sidewalk. The lane shift will be in place until mid-March, after which the lane configuration for eastbound traffic across the I-75 bridge will be two through lanes and one left turn lane to I-75 north. Construction work in the area will take place weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The closure comes as part of continued work on the Windy Hill Diverging Diamond Interchange, one of five projects included in the $48 million traffic and safety improvements along a 1.43-mile stretch of Windy Hill Road from U.S. 41/Cobb Parkway to Powers Ferry Road. Designed to increase capacity, decrease congestion and enhance safety at intersections while minimizing construction costs, the DDI will remove the existing left turn signals for vehicles accessing I-75, eliminating potential crossing conflicts between vehicles. The DDI is expected to be operational this March.
  • Interstate North Parkway: Feb. 1-March 31 | Sidewalk/Trail Installation
Beginning Wednesday, Feb. 1, one lane in each direction will be closed along Interstate North Parkway from Windy Ridge Parkway to the Atlanta Marriott Northwest at Galleria while a new 12-foot sidewalk/multi-use trail is installed along the east side of the road. Lane closures at both ends of the project are already underway due to construction on the Diverging Diamond Interchange on the north end of the Interstate North Parkway project and with Windy Ridge Parkway bridge construction on the south end. The sidewalk/multi-use trail project will be completed by the end of March. At that time, the northbound lane will reopen. One southbound lane will remain closed permanently.

  • Windy Ridge Parkway: Feb. 2-10 | Bridge Widening
The westbound lanes of Windy Ridge Parkway over I-75 will be closed between Interstate North Parkway and Circle 75 Parkway 9 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, Thursday, Feb. 2 through Friday, Feb. 10. Crews will be pouring decks for the widened portion of the bridge on the north side. The Windy Ridge Parkway bridge, which is expected to be substantially complete and operational in March, will provide enhanced pedestrian accommodations and green way space. Signage and traffic control devices will be in place to direct drivers in each construction area. Motorists should follow the posted detours or take alternate routes to avoid congestion and delays.
