Innovative library and cultural arts facility open in community

A full slate of activities is planned for the new Sewell Mill Library and Cultural Center, which opened its door to the public this morning. This unique facility offers space for people of all ages to develop and practice artistic skills. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 9.

“Sewell Mill is decidedly about creative space and collaboration, from individuals concentrating on expressing their artistic skills to crowds enjoying musical and theatrical performances alongside traditional library space,” Library Director Helen Poyer said. “This is a major and unique community asset that all of Cobb County will be proud to use and visit.”

The 28,000-square-foot Sewell Mill facility includes unique children and teen spaces, study rooms, recording studios, a conference room, a digital maker space commons, a community room, an art gallery and art classrooms, an outdoor amphitheater and a black box theater. Along with regular library events for children and adults, programs scheduled for Sewell Mill include free musical performances, writers group meetings, photography classes and screenings of classic films. Constructed at 2051 Lower Roswell Road on the site of the former East Marietta Library inside Sewell Park, the Sewell Mill center is a joint use facility of the Cobb County Public Library System and Cobb County PARKS. Funding for the facility includes $8.6 million from the 2016 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax and $2 million from the Georgia Board of Regents.

Availability of some services will be limited during December. For more information, call 770-509-2711.

New Aviation Park Open in Our Community

Last week, county officials gathered with the Town Center Community Improvement District and Town Center Community Alliance to cut the ribbon on Aviation Park, launching the flight-themed recreation area at the corner of Barrett Lakes and Cobb Place Boulevards, adjacent to the Cobb County International Airport. Located about halfway along Noonday Creek Trail, visitors will enjoy an airplane-shaped rope and cable climbing structure over a ‘mock runway’ rubber surface, ADA accessible swings and a climbing structure featuring an educational STEM electronic play system.

An aviation control tower themed building contains restroom facilities. The airplane wing designed picnic pavilion and adjacent open green space is the perfect spot for viewing the 200 average daily take offs and landings at our international airport. The Zagster Town Center Bike Share station includes four new bikes for riding on Noonday Creek Trail and plans call for public art displays
